When I was 13, I saw my
first mosaic on the wall of a friend's home. An
inner bell rang, and I knew I would find a path
to that artform. It took 30 years and was well
worth waiting for. Along the way I moved to my
land here and took up Lapidary work, teaching
myself from books and back issues of Rock &
Gem and Lapidary Journal magazines. Being of a generally
reclusive disposition, I've always gone the
self-taught route, scavenging the knowledge,
tools and materials required for what I've
wanted to do. My first mosaics were made using
vitreous glass tiles, but I soon turned to
livelier, richer, stained glass. One thing I
particularly appreciate about mosaicing is its
amenability to the realties of my rural life. It
can be done in a small space, with minimal
equipment, whenever I have the time for it. My
love for animals and nature is something I hope
shines through my life and work. |
